I can not believe the disrespect shown to the Big Ten Conference by the College Football Playoff Committee. In the first playoff rankings of the year the top four seeds where, in order, Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame and Clemson. The glaring omission from the top four is a team from what might be the best conference this year, the Big Ten.
I would have thought that after this past weekend in which the top two teams in the Big Ten played each other, in an instant classic and likely the best game of the season, the winner of that game would at least be in the top four teams. So the winner of said game came in as the No. 6 team Ohio State, while the loser of that game came in at No. 7 Penn State. This isn’t even including an undefeated Wisconsin team that the committee ranked No. 9. Both Ohio State and Wisconsin should be upset with their placement in the rankings.
Ohio State should have the biggest gripe with the committee after they placed Clemson in the four seed, instead of either Ohio State or Oklahoma. There is no way that Clemson should be placed in the top four above those teams. Clemson’s only good win of the season was against Auburn, who looks like they might be overrated, and they have a loss to Syracuse. Ohio State’s only loss is to Oklahoma and they just beat the team that was ranked second in the nation, While Oklahoma’s only loss is to No. 15 Iowa State. It would make more sense if Oklahoma was four, Ohio State five and Clemson six.
When it comes to Penn State their ranking makes sense after their loss to Ohio State, and they are exactly where they should be in the rankings, but I’m not sure the same can be said for Wisconsin. While I understand the the Badgers schedule has been quite mundane, but it doesn’t change the fact that they have not lost a game, which is more than can be said for TCU. I think what the committee should have thought of how the teams would matchup against each other, and in my opinion Wisconsin would win that matchup. TCU would not have enough offense to get past what is one of the best defenses in the country, something they haven’t played against this year, and their defense isn’t good enough to stop the heavy running attack of the Badgers. This is why Wisconsin should be ranked as the No. 8 team in the nation, but not any higher because even though I am from Wisconsin, I understand that the other seven teams ranked higher would probably win against the Badgers.
So while the committee has disrespected the Big Ten Conference in the first rankings of the season, Ohio State and Wisconsin will have the opportunity to prove the committee wrong.
